Worship style

charismatic. liturgical. evangelical

At our core we recognize that worship is any response towards God of our awareness of His love for us. Our worship encompasses all of our lives. Yet, there is something unique about gathering as followers of Jesus and using songs, symbols, prayers to unite our hearts in worship. Our aim is to embrace three streams of Christian faith.

We are charismatic in that we encourage and nurture the expression of spiritual gifts in our gatherings and our music. Our leaders expect to be hearing from God in the moment. We expect that God has things he wants to do and say that might be made know right in the meeting. Our intention is to respond to that for the purpose of creating a space of encounter with God. We are all hosts for his work and presence.

We are liturgical in that we embrace rhythms of the church worldwide and ancient. Preparing for gathered worship is certainly not all spontaneous. We fold the lectionary into our worship and draw our messages from its passages. Communion is the central element in our worship. There is a "work of the people" approach to our times of worship. Everyone is invited to pray with us, sing with us, and participate with us.

We are evangelical in that our worship is meant to invite a response to his Word and presence with action. We hold the Bible in high regard. Our songs and messages should be cruciform - pointing to the self-sacrifice of Jesus making possible the redemption of humanity. The means of our worship, our songs and prayers and devotions, point to a desired end - the conversion of every part of our lives to serve the banner of God's love.

Worship community

intergenerational. invitational. relational.

We have a culture of kindness and deference in our worship artisans. Young and old are encouraged to develop their gifts and given opportunities to offer them as a part of a team creating a space of worship encounter. Our musical teams have middle schoolers just getting started and folks who've been playing in churches for years. Humility is an extremely high value. There are no superstars here. Sometimes we field a large band with drums and electric guitar. Sometimes it's a team of two or three leading simple songs of love. We prioritize relational health over filling ever slot on a Sunday. We have fun when we prepare and play on Sunday. And we have fun playing music outside of the church, too.

On any given Sunday there will be a variety of people on stage, leading worship. Some will be reading, some playing, some singing, some offering technical support and still others offering testimony, exhortation, or prophetic encouragement. "Everyone gets to play," as we like to say in the Vineyard.
